LabNote

A laboratory notebook system designed for academic genomics groups

This work, published in NAR, was carried out in our laboratory by Imbert MC, Nguyen VK, Granjeaud S, Nguyen C, Jordan BR. You will find here instructions to download a demo version - for a first try - and an empty database - to really start your project.

What is LabNote?

LabNote is a relational laboratory database system, adapted to the daily book-keeping needs of laboratories that must keep track of information acquired on hundreds or thousands of clones in an effective and user-friendly fashion. Data, whether final or related to experiments in progress, can be accessed in many different ways, e.g. by clone name, by gene, by experiment or through DNA sequence. Updating, import and export of results is made easier by specially developed tools. This system, in network version, serves several groups in our Institute and (over the Internet) elsewhere, and is instrumental in collaborative studies based on expression profiling. It can be used in many similar situations involving progressive accumulation of information on sets of clones or related objects.

Technical background

A database is a large collection of information organized for rapid search and retrieval, usually with a computer. When it is relational, a database is a set of tables containing data fitted into predefined categories. Data is organized in fields, records and files. A file is a table made of rows and columns. Each row is called a record. Each column is called a field and has a name. The intersection of a row and a column contains a piece of data, the value of the field for this particular record. Our relational database is called Labnote. To develop it, we used a Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS). This is a complex set of programs that control the organization, storage and retrieval of data for many users. A database management system can also control the security of the database. The system we used has been developed by ACI and is called 4th Dimension.

Download instructions

The current version was developed with 4D Server 1.5.4 and then converted and corrected to work with the 6.5 version. To run it on your computer you will need one of these programs: 4D Server/client, 4D or 4D Runtime. 4D Runtime seems to be free and can be found at ACI FTP Products site. You can also find copies on our site: International PC/Mac or French PC/Mac.
We setup a PC archive in which you will find 2 databases:
o The LabNote-Demo will allow you to evaluate LabNote with some dummy data.
o The LabNote-New will allow you to create and work with your own data.

Ongoing developpments, Contacts

This downloadable version is given without any support. Nevertheless, you can send your questions to improve the install and use instructions and to build a useful FAQ. Remarks and ideas are also welcome, and may be implemented by us if they converge with our needs. Sorry for not having time to do more... By now, some new features will be added to LabNote, as well as, new tools will be available to ease the import of IMAGE clones, of hybridization intensities. Please contact S. Granjeaud.
